Did you know….

- #1: Iceland’s surface is made entirely of volcanic rock. There is said to be approximately 130 volcanic mountains within the country
- #2: When Iceland was founded, the only native animal was the arctic fox. After animals were brought into the country, some animals have developed their own evolutional changes and features, unique to Iceland, such as the Icelandic horse.
- #3: Iceland is located where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. This is one of the only places on earth that two plates can be seen above sea level.
- #4: Up until 1989, there was a complete alcohol prohibition within the country, which is now celebrated as a holiday called “Beer Day” every year on March 1st.
- #5: In 2010, a large volcanic eruption put Iceland on the radar for tourism. Since then, tourism has flourished, becoming a majority of the country’s income.
- #6: Iceland has been rated the #1 safest country in the world, for 15 years straight.


- #7: The water found in the county is safe to drink directly from the taps (and is quite delicious as well)! Hot water within hotels and houses come directly from the natural springs under ground.
- #8: Iceland has a “naming committee”. When a baby is born in the country, the proposed name must be approved by this committee.
- #9: Being in the arctic circle, Iceland has 23 hours of darkness in mid-December and 23 hours of light in mid-June.
- #10: Icelandic culture has a deep fascination and belief in Elves. These Elves have been blamed for negative and unexplained events throughout Icelandic history. With that, there is an actual job position called the “elf negotiator” that has been created for this reason.
